Dhaka International University (DIU) has suspended all classes and examinations scheduled for today, Sunday (November 23), following a wave of panic that spread among students after four earthquakes were felt in the capital over the last two days.
The decision was confirmed by Registrar Professor Md. Rafiqul Islam around 8:00 AM this morning, who stated, “Due to unavoidable circumstances, today’s classes and examinations have been postponed.”
Cracks and Anxiety Fuel Student Protest
The initial major earthquake on Friday, followed by three more tremors on Saturday, created new alarm among the student body. This anxiety was intensified by reports of cracks appearing in the walls of a building on the Old Campus and in residential halls number 3 and 4, making them fearful for their safety.
In response to the deteriorating situation, students living in the residential halls gathered late Saturday night, moving from the Old Campus to the New Campus to demand the immediate suspension of exams.
Students Cite Safety and Mental Distress
Students expressed deep concerns over the continuous tremors and the structural integrity of their living spaces.
Students complained that their accommodation had become high-risk, and they were mentally unable to focus on their studies. One student remarked, “We feel scared just entering our rooms. It’s crucial that exams are suspended not just for today, but for several days.”
While the immediate suspension of today’s classes and exams brought some relief, students noted they remain uncertain about future decisions. They have urged the university administration to enhance campus security and demanded that the pressure of examinations be eased until the situation stabilizes and conditions return to normal.
